Question: I have to get this page built fast and decent. I need some big links, some document links, and a visual or two. Help!
Answer: Like a sneeze - I GOTCHUUU! Let's do this!
Any time you need to get a page up and fast, layouts are your friend. I have said 100x - you can always go back and make it prettier, but sometimes - you just have to "Git 'Er Done."
Layouts are available in v6, you just have to let that page know you need it to be in a Layout.
So! Fire up a new page and look at the top corner of your screen. You see the fourth button over? Click that! This will open up the Layout Widget. Choose the layout that you think will work best for your page. I'm going to pick the sixth one (Header-with-three-columns)
Now, you can grab any island you want and drag it into a column. The island will automatically set itself to 100% (which in this case means 100% of the column it is in - even if that column is only 1/3 of the page.
I'm putting a PTE up top, a button island on each side, and a carousel in the middle.
I can click the "Island Properties" for the PTE, make the background blue, and type some text in the PTE Content. (30 seconds)
I can do the same thing for each button island : Background color, wrangle the buttons themselves with text, hover color and a link. (5 min) I dropped an image into the carousel and added some text. (2 min)
Then, I added a Dashboard to the left (I made that yesterday) and a List Island to the right with some resources I know I'll need. (5 minutes)
And it's done. About 15 minutes (maybe less) Is it gorgeous? No. But it was FUNCTIONAL and FAST. It also looks good on a variety of monitor sizes, due to the nature of layouts and page responsiveness.
Next week - we will go back into this page and show you how you can "spiffy it up" quickly. :)
