Securing PDF Files to Disable Printing, Copying Text, etc
Following the process below will secure a PDF file so that no changes can be made, the file cannot be printed, and highlighting/copying of text and images within the file is disabled. This will not prevent someone from taking a screenshot or emailing the entire file. However, if a file is secured and emailed, even if opened from another location, a password will still be required to print or make any changes to the file.
While in the PDF file:
-
Go to File, Properties
-
On the Security tab, there is a dropdown for Security Method. Choose Password Security.
-
Another box will open, under the middle (Permissions) section, check the box to Restrict editing and printing of the document.
-
Change both dropdowns to None
-
Be sure the box to Enable copying of text, images, and other content is unchecked.
-
Enter a password
-
Click OK
-
You will then be prompted to re-enter the password
-
Once you save the file, you will notice that the print button is now grayed out. The new settings will not take effect until you Save.
To unlock the file and make changes, print, etc.
-
Go back to File, Properties
-
Change the dropdown on the Security tab to No Security
-
Enter password
-
Click OK
