Selecting the Structure of your First Section
When you create a Structures Page, you will be brought to that Page, and there is already a Section there. You must first choose the Structure of this first section. There are twelve Structures to choose from. You can add more sections later with the same or different structures, drag-and-drop your Islands between structures and sections, and even move entire sections!
Glossary - Section vs Structure:
Let’s take a minute to define these two Terms.
A Section is a like a horizontal “brick.” You can have as many sections stacked one on top of another on a page as you like. Sections are divided into Structures, similar to columns. These structures are what hold your Islands. You can have as many Islands stacked one on top of another in a structure as you like, but as you will see as you continue reading our Guide: Island Height determines Structure Height, and Structure Height determines Section Height!
The twelve available structure patterns cannot be changed, but the flexibility of Structure Pages means we can still do quite a bit of customization! Hover to highlight your choice and click to choose.
For this first example, I’ll choose the second icon, the one with two equal sized structures.
At the top of the page, I can see the page header, displaying the Name of my Page (1) and the Page toolbar (2). The Island Toolbox (3) is already open for me to begin selecting Islands. I can also see the “Top 5 Islands.” (4)
Let’s take a moment to talk about what each of these things are.
Page Parts 101 - The Page Header
The top of your page is a static page header. You’ll see the page Name (in this case, Structure for Guides) on the left. This tells your users “where they are.”
On the right are five icons: Subscribe, Print, Refresh, Lock/Unlock, and Show/Hide Island Toolbox. You can also hover over each of these to get a “tooltip” to remind you what they are.
OS Pro Note: If you'd like, you can turn all page headers transparent.
Page Parts 101 - The Island Toolbar
After unlocking the page by clicking the lock, clicking the "double-arrows" on the far right will open the Island Toolbox on the right.
This list of Islands is organized by Alphabetically by Application (with your Organization’s top Five at the top.)
You can expand any of the categories below by selecting the category name and scrolling through the islands within that list. If you know the name of the Island you are looking for, it can be typed in the search bar at the top of the list. Once you’ve found the island you’d like to place on this page, simply left click and hold to drag it into one of the sections on the page (1). You’ll know which structure you’re in when it turns light blue (2).
Once you have added Islands, you can then rearrange them on the page by left clicking and holding the Island and dragging the Island to the structure where you want it. You can add multiple Islands above (1) or below (2) other Islands. You can move Islands around in the sections of this structure, or even move Islands between Sections! We will talk about how to add more Sections the next Guide.
