Question : I need to delete a few existing fields from a Help Desk; we no longer use them. I also need to change one from being a Text Box to being a Drop Down. It just won't let me! Is the best approach to create a new one or is there a way to delete?
Answer : Due to the number of reports that can be generated by the Help Desk tool, the system does not allow you to Delete or Change any field that has been used. (This would break the reports - No Bueno!!) So, you have a two choices.
Option One : Re-create the Help Desk. Depending on the size of the "overhaul" you need to perform, this may actually be the easiest and best solution.
Option Two : Archive the "old" field, create a "new" field and then adjust the island wherever it lives in the portal. Example is below.
Example:
I have a field that asks people to tell me what day they are available for HFH. Right now, it is a Date Chooser, and I'd really prefer it be a Drop Down so I can be more specific.
It has been used, so I can't edit it; I'll need to create a new field.
Step One - I'm going to edit the name of the "old" field so I don't use it again. (Also, Help Desk fields can't ever have the same name, so if I was replacing it, I would need to do this anyway)
I've created a new field, similar, but this time it is a Drop Down
So now I just need to go to the page where my Help Desk lives. When I go to "Configure this Island" I just "uncheck" the OLD field and check the new field.
Good luck - I hope this helps!
