OS EDU - How to : Download, Update and Create/Customize Layouts within the Portal (Framework 6.1+, 7.0+ and higher) Follow
This is a How To that will teach you how to download a Layout out of your Portal and properly Rename it so that you can make updates or create customizations without needing server access.
**You must be on framework 6.1 or higher, or framework 7.0 or higher!**
Step One: Download out the Layout you want to change
Visit Portal Tools -> Manage Portal Framework -> Layouts Manager
From there, choose the Fourth Tab: Import and Export Layouts. You'll see a list of ALL your layouts.
Choose the Layout you want to modify, and click the "Export" cloud next to it. (My example below is the new OnSemble Image Banner from v7.0) You will now have a .zip file in your Downloads.
OS Pro Tip:
Sometimes, when you download out the .zip file, your system may add a single 'apostrophe' to either end of the file name. If so, you won't be able to proceed until you RENAME the file.
- Go to your Downloads.
- Make sure you can see File name extensions.
- Locate the file you just downloaded. Right click to rename. Delete both the apostrophes. Save. You'll get a warning message; ignore it.
Step Two: Extract
Personally, I like to drag the .zip file out of my downloads and park it where I can see it. Like, my desktop. That's what my screenshots will show.
Start a new Folder. Name it something simple, but easy to recognize what it is.
Good Names:
- SpringBanner2020
- BannerWhiteLogo
- BirthdayBanner
Bad Names:
- New Banner
- Icon
- Other Banner
So, now, my desktop looks like this; renamed .zip file on the left, new folder on the right.
Go to where the downloaded zip file is, right-click it, and select Extract Files (or Extract All). Browse and find your new folder. Click Extract.
Step Three: Start Renaming (.config)
No matter what kind of Layout you download, it will have a .config file in there. Making the following changes, consistently, will help ensure you get the results you need. There are FOUR places that you should change; best practice is to make them ALL the same as the new folder.
OS Pro Tip: Exact spelling, punctuation, etc. really do matter. Cut and Paste is your friend.
Every single . " and / matters. Leave them alone.
- Name: This is what will show up in the Portal in the Layouts Manager. Change it.
- ID: Change the last item only.
- Path: Change the 3rd and 4th items (for consistency, we suggest that you change them both)

Step Four: More Renaming (.ascx)
Since we changed the name of the .ascx file in the previous step, we need to actually change the name of the .ascx file! Just right click and rename.

Step Five: Make your changes!
Make any changes as necessary to the images, or the .ascx files that modify the layout you are changing. Other support center articles can assist with these changes.
Save the file. Zip it up (just right-click on the folder, and select Send To -> Compressed (zipped) folder)
Step Six: Send it back and reassign it
Head back to Layouts Manager.
Choose Import Layout
Choose your newly renamed layout and upload it!
OS Pro Tip: Assign to just yourself first, for testing, before assigning to others!
