In Chrome, when trying to open up 'file:///' links, it seems as though they have now denied these file types to be opened up. There is an extension in Chrome that allows these files to be opened. If you are in Chrome, navigate to this link and add the extension to the browser. It will allow the opening of the files.

Hi Jerad,
This link seems broken.
404. That’s an error.
The requested URL was not found on this server. That’s all we know.
I found the extension link in a search:
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/enable-local-file-links/nikfmfgobenbhmocjaaboihbeocackld?hl=en
The downside is that it opens up in a web browser window and not in File Explorer. And if you then click on a file, it downloads it to you computer instead of just opening it up in Word/Excel/Adobe.
Hi Heidi,
I forgot to reply back. I found the link last month too. But, as you mentioned, it does have its downsides.
Thank you for sharing
After I wrote that, I then found this article on Passageways that helped me fix the issue.
